San Marcos won its pool Saturday at the Arcadia boys volleyball tournament before falling to West Ranch in the quarterfinals, 25-23.
Coach Roger Kuntz highlighted the play of Ben McKenzie as well as Matt Welsh, a 6-foot-6 senior middle blocker brought over from the basketball team.
The Royals began by beating La Mirada 25-20, 25-7 and then moved on to take down El Rancho 25-17, 25-11. Next up was a 3-set victory over San Marino, 15-25, 25-21, 15-6, that clinched the pool.
San Marcos hosts Santa Barbara on Thursday.
