Rams take final set, match

Friday’s non-league boys tennis match between Cate and San Marcos came down to the wire. It was San Marcos that tripped on that wire, falling 10-8 to the Rams.

Cate’s doubles team of Gregory Mak and Blake Mackall overcame Scott Messier and Jackson Mann in the day’s final set 7-5 to claim the overall team victory.  Had Messier and Mann prevailed, the Royals would have had the edge on games in a tiebreaker.

“It was a well played, tough-nails match,” said Rams head coach Bob Bonning, noting that Cate did a good job of winning the close sets. “Those matches will often define a match and today we were on the right end of them.”

Mackall and Mak swept three sets in doubles along with the the duo of Mark Mullan and Rohit Gotswamy. The Royals have been able to control doubles play in all of their wins so far this season and were unable to make up for a 3-6 day in doubles.

Petar Jivkov did sweep his three singles sets for San Marcos and Parker Funk won two out of his three sets.

The Rams, No. 4 in Div. IV, even their record at 3-3 after starting the season 0-3.
