Pirates put Cardinals down in three

Bishop Diego’s boys volleyball team faced off against Division III’s ninth-ranked team in its season opener on Wednesday, falling to Santa Ynez 25-13, 25-14, 28-26.

“It’s actually good to have a season opener like this,” said Cardinals head coach Joe Reiken, wanting his young team to get a feel for the tougher competition he expects come league season.

The Cardinals do not have a senior on their roster and do not return a single starter from last year’s team.

“Our success this year will be dictated by how good our defense is,” Reiken said.

Junior Johnny Brand led the Cardinals with nine kills while junior Spencer Shull added seven.

Bishop plays again on Thursday at Malibu and then again on Friday and Saturday at the San Luis Obispo Tournament.
