Pirates pinch Royals with big first inning

San Marcos started digging on Wednesday but not fast enough, as the Royals couldn’t get out of a 6-0 hole and ended up losing 9-5 to Santa Ynez.

Jenise Fretz delivered a powerful three-run homer in the third inning and was 3-for-3 at the plate.

Natalie Williams made her presence felt with both her bat and glove, accounting for seven of the Royals’ 11 outs that weren’t made by Kelly McKay’s strikeouts while hitting a two-run double. The Royals finished with a slight 11-8 advantage in base hits.

But the Pirates’ six-run first inning was too much to overcome for the Royals, who fall to 3-3 on the season. The Royals begin Channel League play on Friday against Santa Barbara.
