Santa Barbara defeated Hart 380-459 on Monday as Jack Perry’s even-par 72 at Valencia Country Club was the crown jewel in the Dons’ boys golf season-opener.
“He never really got himself into any trouble,” said Dons head coach James Bedard, adding that Perry also birdied the two toughest holes on the course.
Bedard also really liked the way Ray Gerow and Mickey Kirby finished their rounds.
Gerow birdied six of his last 10 holes after beginning the day seven-over par through eight holes. Kirby was even par on the back nine after going 11 over through the first nine.
“Those guys finished strong,” Bedard said. “It was good to see them, this early in the year, handle adversity that well.”
In the end, Gerow carded a 74 while Kirby was Santa Barbara’s fifth scorer at 83. Shane Lebow matched Gerow’s 74 and sophomore Sean Searls debuted for the Dons with a 77.
Santa Barbara travels to Servite on Wednesday to play the defending CIF champion, who Bedard thinks is the favorite to win it again.
