The UCSB men’s tennis team lost its first home match this season to No. 19 Washington on Tuesday. The match is the first of four they will play at home this week. The Gauchos now have an overall record of 5-7 and are 3-1 in the Big West Conference.
The Huskies started off strong by sweeping the Gauchos in their doubles matches. Alex Konigsfeldt and Taylor Chavez Goggin picked up their first loss this season in No. 1 Doubles. The duo was defeated by Washington’s Kyle McMorrow and Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan 8-4. Konigsfeldt and Chavez Goggin are now 4-1 this season.
Though the Gauchos were also defeated in five of six singles matches, they did not go down without a fight. Junior Alex Konigsfeldt and Sophomore Mathieu Forget took their matches to three sets in No. 2 and No. 6 Singles.
“We had chances at No. 2 Singles and won the first set at No. 6,” said Coach Marty Davis. “The match was considerably closer than the 6-1 score would indicate.”
Lucas Sudow tallied the only point for the Gauchos in his No. 3 Singles victory. Sudow defeated Derek Drabble in two sets, 6-2, 6-1. The freshman from Helsingborg, Sweden continues to lead the team in singles wins and boasts a record of 10-1 for the season.
The Gauchos will face No. 37 Northwestern tomorrow at 9:30AM at the Recreation Center Courts. Coach Marty Davis stated that it will be a good match between the two teams.
“I expect the quality of tennis will be very high and that the match will be very, very close, possibly coming to a climatic finish.”
