McKay makes it happen in pitcher’s circle

Kelly McKay hadn’t stepped into the pitcher’s circle since she was a freshman on the JV team, but the senior made a triumphant return on Tuesday in San Marcos’ 14-4 softball win at Bishop Diego.

McKay, who normally plays first base, struck out eight and walked none while allowing nine hits. She was taking the place of usual-starter Corinne Yingling, who pitched nine innings on Monday and needed the rest.

“Kelly showed us that we won’t have to worry about putting her in if Corinne ever needs a rest,” said coach Alex Sheldon.

Every player in the San Marcos lineup had a hit in the game, and the Royals scored a whopping eight runs in the second inning. The two biggest hits in the frame were and RBI double by Natalie Williams that made it 2-1 in favor of the Royals and a two-run double by Jenise Fretz. Sheldon also praised the solid infield play of Natalie Williams, Hannah Ball and Leanne Fretz.

The Royals (2-1) host Channel Island on Friday.
