LMU gets better of Gauchos

No. 12. UCSB (9-8) fell to No. 9 Loyola Marymount (9-2), 9-6, on Sunday afternoon at Campus Pool.

UCSB came out firing, outscoring the Lions, 2-1, in the first quarter. Early on, the Gaucho’s defense looked strong as well, mostly limiting LMU to last-second heaves as the shot clock expired.

In the second, both teams recorded two more goals. The second Lion goal came on a controversial penalty shot, which occurred after a UCSB player returned to the pool from an ejection, one second early. Unfortunately for the Gauchos, this proved to be the turning point in the match.

In the third, the Lions evened the score after UCSB’s goalie was ejected, then notched the go-ahead point, as the Gauchos remained scoreless. The Gauchos continued to battle, but were outscored 4-2 by LMU in the fourth quarter.

UCSB’s next contests will be next Sunday, March 14, when they host Cal State San Bernardino and Bucknell, in a pair of non-conference games. The Gauchos are scheduled to play San Bernardino at 2 pm, before facing Bucknell at 5 pm, at Campus Pool.
