DP’s Huthsing shines in varsity debut

After spedning his freshman year as the backup catcher, Dos Pueblos’ Joe Huthsing has taken his skills to the mound.

The sophomore’s first varsity start was a dandy, as he pitched six scoreless innings, allowing six hits with seven strikeouts and no walks as the Chargers beat host Cabrillo 7-1 Tuesday in the Central Coast Tournament.

Huthsing also had a fine day at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a run scored, as did Jordan Drewisch. Josh Paden had a pair of hits and two runs scored and catcher Jesus Salas had two hits and three RBIs, including a solo home run in the first inning.

“We got after them early with the bats and stayed on them,” said coach Nate Mendoza. ” Huthsing threw his curve for strikes, and we really dominated the game on the mound.”

The Chargers are now 2-1 after dropping their opener to Mendoza’s alma mater, Lompoc.

“This one would have stung worse because at Lompoc we strongly dislike Cabrillo,” he said.

He gets to visit his old stomping grounds once again as the Chargers play at Righetti on Thursday.
