Dons win narrowly in “Santa Ynez Shootout”

Santa Barbara High had six boys golfers scored in the 70s on Friday, winning a 5-team match at the Alisal River Course by nine strokes with a 373.

The match featured the Dons, San Marcos, Dos Pueblos, Clovis West and Santa Ynez, and has unofficially been dubbed the “Santa Ynez Shootout” by the coaches.

Santa Barbara’s Jack Perry and Ray Gerow shared medalist honors by firing rounds of even-par 72. Clovis West, which finished third in the state two years ago, took second place with a 382 while DP was at 391, San Marcos at 396 and Santa Ynez at 415.

Carson Curtis and Michael Yi each shot 74 for the Chargers while Kyle Rieb led the Royals with a 76.

“I think this was a good look at what’s to come for league,” said Santa Barbara coach James Bedard. “It was almost like a playoff match because none of the boys played with teammates…. We had a long week with four matches and I think we handled it well.”
