Dons tear up front nine to make 342

Santa Barbara’s boys golf team shot it lowest round of the year on Tuesday, tallying an 8-under 342 to Ventura’s 355 at Buenaventura Golf Course.

The excellent scores for both teams did have a catch, however. Because of course maitenance, the full round consisted of two trips through the front nine holes. The greens for those nine holes had just been aerated, so there was a two-putt rule adopted to account for the unusual putting surfaces. As a result, both teams recorded their best rounds of the season.

“It was still a very good round,” said Dons head coach James Bedard.

Dons Jack Perry and Shane Lebow matched each other with the day’s best round at six-under 64. Perry sank eight birdies but bogeyed a hole while Lebow was steadier, recording six birdies without a bogey.

Ray Gerow was also under par for the Dons at 69. Gerow’s round included two eagles in three holes, though he lost two of the strokes by posting a double on the hole in between.

Ventura’s Ben Shur led the Cougars at four-under 66.

“It was another example that you can’t take a break in any of these (league) matches,” Bedard said.

Santa Barbara is now 8-2 overall and 2-1 in league.

The Dons host Servite on Thursday at Birnam Wood. One of Santa Barbara’s two losses is an 11-stroke defeat to Servite at Western Hills Country Club on March 3.
