Defending Channel League champion Santa Barbara picked up its first league win in boys golf on Thursday, defeating Dos Pueblos 386-406 at Birnam Wood.
The Dons went undefeated in league last season but dropped their first contest of this season on Tuesday against San Marcos.
“In the end, we’re really happy to walk away with a league win,” said Dons head coach James Bedard. “We’ve learned any league win is a good win this year.”
That’s no disrespect to Dos Pueblos, but giving respect to an ultra-tough league in which all five schools are capable of making the postseason.
Shane Lebow’s even-par 70 was the lowest round of the day, coming after Lebow birdied the 18th hole. Teammates Jack Perry, Mickey Kirby and Sean Searls posted equal 78s with Ray Gerow’s 82 being the Dons’ fifth score.
Dos Pueblos turned in the next-best rounds, a 72 from Lane Fuller and a 75 from Nick DeHaris. Carson Curtis and Michael Yi had matching 81s followed by Brett Patton’s 97.
Santa Barbara (7-2, 1-1) moves on to face Ventura, a team that went winless in the Channel League last season but one Bedard said could actually be champion of a lot of other leagues in the state.
Dos Pueblos will see Buena the same day.
