Dons dominate Royal netters, 14-4

Santa Barbara High’s quest for a 12th consecutive Channel League title got off to a good start on Tuesday as the Dons defeated host San Marcos handily, 14-4.

Jim Vaughan went 2-0 in singles play for the Dons, including a win in a tiebreaker set against top-Royal Petar Jivkov. Santa Barbara won all nine singles sets, and the doubles teams of Chris Williams-Matt Baum and Chris Grant-Logan Liddell both went 2-0.

Geremia said that Jivkov, a freshman, was impressive for San Marcos (5-1, 0-1) despite going 0-3 on the day.

“He played some really good tennis. He had to play Chase Melton and Jim Vaughan, who are two tough seniors. Then he had to play our star freshman, Graham Maassen. His record looks like 0-3 but he played really good tennis,” said Geremia.

He added that he doesn’t think the Dons (3-0, 1-0) are the favorite in the Channel League this year.

“We’ll have a very tough match at Dos Pueblos, and I’d say we’re also the underdog at Ventura. I definitely wouldn’t consider us the favorite to win the Channel League,” he said.
