Chargers wind up in 11th at Best of West

An 11th place finish in what coach Chris Hughes considers the best boys volleyball tournament in the country made for a productive weekend for Dos Pueblos.

“We made a giant leap forward, and that’s kind of why we play tournaments,” he said after the Chargers finished up at the Best of the West Tournament on Saturday in Poway.

The tournament hosts defeated the Chargers in the day’s opening match 25-22, 25-18. The Chargers went on to defeat St. John Bosco in three sets, 27-25, 17-25, 15-8, but lost the ninth-place game 25-27, 25-18, 15-8.

“Will McCracken does everything we need him to do, and he just had a great all-around tournament,” said Hughes.

The coach also said that middle blockers Robbie Mestas and Michael Ellsworth were able to get a part of nearly every block and “came alive” offensively. Similarly, back-row players Cole Arutian and Wade Robinson were touching every ball in the back row.

“We’re one of those teams that I think no one likes to play, because the ball keeps coming back,” said Hughes.

It should be a great weekend at the Thunderdome coming up, as the Chargers will host 35 teams in the 35th annual Dos Pueblos Invitational.
