Chargers solid on first day in Poway

Facing Loyola, the top prep boys volleyball team in the nation, was a tough way to open the Best of the West Tournament in Poway. Dos Pueblos, however, put up a solid fight and fell to the Cubs 25-18, 25-19 before winning their next two matches on Friday to advance in the Gold Division.

“Some of the best teams in the country are here, and it’s nice to play them and nice to be in the upper-half of the bracket,” said coach Chris Hughes.

After playing Loyola, DP went on to beat Carlsbad 27-25, 25-19 and Deer Valley of Arizona 25-23, 25-13. Hughes said that Cole Arutian and Wade Robinson were touching every ball in the back row and playing excellent defense.

DP (4-2) plays host Poway on Saturday morning.
