Chargers fall just short of Cougars, 10-8

Dos Pueblos’ boys tennis team dropped its Channel League-opener at Ventura on Tuesday despite a strong showing in doubles, losing 10-8. Missing top singles player Sasha Gryaznov due to illness and Richard Cheng due to preparation for the state finals in mock trial, DP went 0-9 in singles sets against the Cougars, who feature two top-40 players from the 16’s age division.

In doubles, however, Malcolm Sutton/Christian Edstrom and Andy Silverstein/Eric Katz each went 3-0. The Chargers lost just nine games in the nine doubles sets.

“Austin Cano played an epic set (in singles), involving a lot of long rallies… Peter Shao and Sean Simpson had a see-saw battle with the No. 1 team of  Brandon Bushnell/Parker Harris. I am proud of the intensity, tenacity, and sportsmanship that the teams displayed,” said coach Liz Frech.

The Chargers host Santa Barbara on Wednesday.
