A pair of competitive games led to a split in Carpinteria’s annual doubleheader with Cabrillo on Saturday, as the visiting Warriors dropped the first game 3-0 before winning the second in comeback fashion, 11-7.
“Splitting a doubleheader and winning the second game always leaves a good taste in your mouth,” said coach Pat Cooney.
Sophomore Colton Rubio pitched a solid game in the opener but the Warriors couldn’t get enough offense to support him against Cabrillo (2-2) starter Thomas White. Zach Boberg and Steven Blum each had a pair of hits in the game for Carpinteria.
Carpinteria fell behind 6-2 after three innings but “started plugging away, kept applying pressure and found a crack” according to Cooney. After scoring two runs in the fourth and fifth innings, the Warriors put up five in the sixth on five hits, a walk and a hit-by-pitch. Victor Garcia had a two-run single in the inning, finishing with four RBIs on the day. He also pitched three innings of two-hit ball in relief of Trevor Madden.
Robert Thornton had three hits with two RBIs and two runs scored while Jose Carrillo also had a pair of hits.
The Warriors (3-2) play Northglenn of Colorado a week from Monday.
