Bishop Diego’s boys tennis team was victorious in its Frontier League opener on Tuesday, defeating St. Bonaventure 13-5 at the Santa Barbara Municipal Courts.
The Cardinals, who are the defending league champions, went 9-0 in singles, led by Mick Mathis’ commanding 6-0, 6-0, 6-0 day. Head coach Ray Vazquez liked what he got from junior Sean Stratford-Jones in the No. 3 spot.
In doubles, senior Eduardo Colasante and sophomore Charlie Taylor teamed together for the first time and took 2-of-3 sets. The set they lost was decided in a tiebreaker.
While the Cardinals picked up their first league win, it was also their first win overall as they improve to 1-2. Santa Clara is next on Thursday.
