Buena’s Scott Zeman and Drew Jacobs combined on a four-hit shutout on Tuesday, giving the Bulldogs the advantage they needed in a 7-0 Channel League victory over San Marcos.
The pair struck out 11 Royals as the Bulldogs won their league opener to join Ventura atop the league standings with a 1-0 record.
San Marcos had been averaging over seven runs a game in its first seven games.
“I thought today we’d be ready to play but their pitcher just shut us down. It was a little surprising that someone can do that to us right now,” said San Marcos head coach Rob Crawford.

David Kim struck out seven in the start for the Royals, who are now 4-4 overall and 1-1 in league. The Royals were only trailing 1-0 until the bottom of the fifth inning, when Buena scored twice followed by four more in the bottom of the sixth.
“David battled,” Crawford thought. “He pitched a superb game but just didn’t get the run support.”
The Royals face Nordhoff on Friday but don’t have another Channel League game until April 9 against Ventura.
