In the first of a four game series, Westmont Baseball (5-12, 1-6 GSAC) suffered a 12-1 loss to the Eagles of Biola (11-4, 5-3 GSAC). Alex Brueske was awarded the win for the Eagles after holding Westmont to just three hits over seven innings of work. The right hander, who threw just 85 pitches, struck out six and walked one.
Gregg Pellici was assigned the loss. Pellici gave up eight runs (seven earned) in four and two-third innings. He allowed six hits, gave up four walks and struck out two.
The Warriors did not provide much support for their pitching staff today. Westmont tallied more errors than hits, producing five of the former and four of the latter.
Kyle Noe pitched three and one-third innings in relief, allowing three runs (two earned) on four hits. Noe struck out two and walked one.
Zachery Embry, making his first collegiate appearance, pitched the ninth inning, allowing one run on one hit. Embry walked two and struck out one.
The Warriors only run came in the first inning after center fielder Terrell Wong led off with a single to left field. Wong reached second on a sacrifice by right fielder Coby Cress and moved to third on a grounder to second by shortstop Jordan Bottenfield.
That brought up Tim Leary who scorched a ground ball down the left field line. Eagle third baseman Boone Farrington never had a chance to make a play on the ball which hit the bag and ricocheted 25 feet into the air. By the time it came down, Wong was already home and Leary was safely within on his way to first.
The Eagles scored their 12 runs on 11 hits. Four of Biola’s runs came on a pair of two-run home runs in the top of the fifth by left fielder Trevor Blood and first baseman Mac Sullivan. Sullivan also hit a solo shot in the seventh inning.
The two teams will square off again tomorrow in a two o’clock game before moving the rest of the series to La Mirada for a Saturday doubleheader.
