Big third inning lifts Royals over Hueneme

Freshman Hannah Ball hit a 2-run double as part of a 4-run third inning as the San Marcos softball team opened its season with a 9-5 home win over Hueneme on Friday.

“I think we surprised some people with how well we executed today,” said coach Alex Sheldon. “We have seven seniors, and they have a real good concept of what it takes to have a successful season.”

Corinne Yingling got the win in the circle in her first varsity start. Ball finished with three hits including the double, which rocketed off the fence on one bounce.

The Vikings had the bases loaded with the tying run at the plate in the seventh, but San Marcos got out of the jam. Jenise Fretz added a pair of hits for the Royals, who host Bishop Diego on Monday.
