For the second year in a row, the Carpinteria Warriors faced off the Havoc from North Oxnard in Beach Cup in the boys under 16 championship match. 2009 belonged to the Havoc while this year the Warriors took the cup.
The Carpinteria Warriors, coached by Mario Carrasco and Ron Peñate, beat North Oxnard 3-0 in penalty shots after being tied 1-1 in regulation time. Both teams had plenty of opportunities to get the winning goal in 90 minutes of play, but the story had a different ending.
Five minutes in the game, North Oxnard opened the score in a scramble in front of the net after a corner kick. Havoc controlled the tempo of the game in the first half while the Warriors tried to settle down and find a way to get back in the match.
The second half saw a more aggressive Warrior team. Carpinteria made more runs, got creative, and took several shots on frame. Eventually, Luis Cisneros found the end of the net in the 61st minute to tie the game on a through-ball sent by Angel Varela.
Overtime had some exciting moments that could have changed the result for either team. North Oxnard had a couple of impressive blasts that went wide while Carpinteria also came very close in front of the net three times, but the score remained tied, bringing on penalty kicks to decide the winner. Nathaniel Avila, Ramiro Vega, and Alfredo Maya scored for the Warriors while the Havoc missed them all thanks to the work of goal keeper Erik Rojas.
North Oxnard came to the finals with a win over Woodland Hills 1-0, a loss to Carpinteria 3-1, and a 1-1 tie against Canyon Country, giving them 10 points total. The Carpinteria Warriors on the other hand won all their pool games 2-1 versus Canyon Country, 3-1 against North Oxnard, and 3-2 against a tough Woodland Hills, who also finished with 10 points but lost to the Havoc.
