Daniel Cabuling pitched a one-hitter through five and two-third innings and picked up a his third win of the season as Westmont Baseball (4-5) earned a 5-4 win in the first game of a twin-bill on Saturday against the Oaks of Menlo (2-2). The Warriors dropped the second game, falling by a score of 6-3.
In the opener, the Warriors scored two runs in the top of the second inning after Evan Soliman singled to left with one away and Zeke Torres reached on a walk. Terrel Wong was then hit by a pitch to load the bases for the Warriors. Soliman scored on a wild pitch and Torress came home on an RBI-single by Evan Wadginski.
The Warriors’ remaining three runs came in the top of the fifth inning. Wadginski received a one-out walk and then advanced to second when Coby Cress reached on an error. After Jordan Bottenfield reached on a walk to load the bases, Colten Christianson was hit by a pitch, forcing in Wadginski. Tim Leary then pinch hit and produced a single to right-center that scored both Cress and Bottenfield.
Cabuling gave up one run on a single hit, struck out ten and walked four. Pete McCarthy picked up a save after pitching two-thirds of an inning in the bottom of the ninth.
In the second game, the Warriors out hit the Oaks 13-12 but could not string the offense together to push across more runs that then Menlo. Starter Gregg Pellici (0-1) gave up five runs in the bottom of the fifth and was assigned the loss. Pellici allowed eight hits, struck out three and walked one.
The Warriors will take 10 days off and then return to action on Tuesday, February 23 when they travel across town to take on the Gauchos at UCSB. First pitch is at two o’clock.
