Warriors pull away from Rangers in second quarter

After a scoreless first period, the Carpinteria girls water polo team won the second quarter 5-0 en route to a 10-3 win over visiting Nordhoff on Wednesday. They are currently alone in second place in the Tri-Valley League.

Annik Marcell scored a pair of goals and added six steals and three assists for the Warriors (6-4, 5-2), while Tatiana Verdugo was “on fire” with 15 saves, including two stops of penalty shots.

Gabi Garcia, Carter Grant and Roxanne Hugo each added a pair of goals for Carpinteria.

“We came out and started to play our game in the second quarter… The better we are on defense the easier it is for us to get fast-break opportunities and score,” said coach Bryan Swarm, who highlighted the play of Grant in the hole-set position.

The Warriors play at Oaks Christian on Friday after beating the Lions in their previous meeting. Malibu is currently in first place.
