Carpinteria’s girls basketball team ran up against No. 1-seeded Bell-Jeff in the second round of the CIF Division V-A playoffs on Saturday, suffering a 65-17 defeat to the defending state champions.
“I’m really proud of my kids, we played hard,” said Warriors head coach Dan Mercer, whose team finishes its season with a 16-10 record.
Jasmine Smith’s 20-point night and Rishonda Napier’s 16-point effort were tops for Bell-Jeff.
Amanda Burch led Carpinteria with 8 points while Caitlin Wallace scored four. The two senior captains led the Warriors to a third-place finish in the Frontier League and a playoff victory over Fillmore this season.
Mercer said he likes what he has coming back next year even though he’s losing his top two scorers.
“I feel very optimistic about next year with the young nucleus we have,” Mercer said.
