SBCC’s Jesse Ferris fired a 1-under-par 71 on Tuesday to capture medalist honors in the 11-team Bakersfield Invitational at Rio Bravo Country Club. Ferris, a sophomore from Encinitas, finished at 1-under 143 in the 36-hole season-opening golf tourney.
He’s the second straight Vaquero to win the event, following in the footsteps of Andrew Perez.
Canyons finished first in the two-day tourney at 739, 19 strokes ahead of runner-up Ventura. Bakersfield (760) was third, followed by SBCC (772). The Vaqueros had five players in the 70s on Tuesday and their 381 total was second to Canyons’ 370.
Ryan Ritzau (78-78) posted a 156, followed by Mike Levine and Ross Martin at 157. Andy Clayton improved his first-round score by 13 shots with a 76.
“We played better today but we’re still not firing on all cylinders,” said coach Chuck Melendez. “We shot 381 but we need to be in the 370s to be the team I know we can be. Our ultimate goal is to win the state.”
The Vaqueros return to action in their own Point Conception Open on Monday at Marshallia Ranch, located at Vandenberg AFB.
