Jesse Ferris recorded a season-best 2-under 69 on Wednesday at Monarch Dunes, guiding SBCC to victory in the three-team Ventura Invitational golf tourney. The Vaqueros totaled 367 — their best score on the year — on the par-71 links course in Nipomo. Ventura was six strokes back at 373, followed by Fresno at 403.
It was the second title of the year for Ferris, a sophomore from Encinitas, and the Vaqueros, who improved to 21-6. Albert Corral shot 73, Ian Crick 74, Andy Clayton 75 and Mike Levine 76 on a day when all six Vaqueros were between 69 and 79.
“Overall it was a great day,” said coach Chuck Melendez. “None of the guys had seen this course before and I’m very proud of them. This will boost our confidence and bodes well for the future.”
Ferris has shot par or better in four of five rounds this year. “Ever since he got his new Titleist clubs, he’s become magical,” noted Melendez.
SBCC opens defense of its conference title on Monday in WSC No. 1, hosted by Canyons at Valencia CC.
