Royals take third for first time in over a decade

San Marcos’ girls water polo team defeated Ventura handily, 13-5, on Thursday to finish third in the Channel League. It’s the best season enjoyed by the Royals in over 10 years, as they head into the playoffs with a 19-8 overall record and a 4-4 mark in the Channel League.

“Today’s game was evidence that this team bought into our system and plays in harmony with each other,” said coach Brian Roth. “Each team member has gained the respect of one another, and because of that we dont look to one person to get things done. Each person feels confident and can execute.”

Hannah Koper scored twice in the first quarter and also drew an ejection in the period, as the Royals started strong and had a 9-3 lead at halftime. Koper and Jade Fitzgerald each collected a hat trick, and Fitzgerald added three goals, four steals, and two assists. As a team, the Royals had 15 steals, and 11 assists.

Zoe Kirker had four steals — two which led to goals — and four assists.
