LARAMIE, Wyo. – The UCSB women’s tennis team pulled out a road victory on Saturday, as they brought down Wyoming, 5-2. The Gauchos improved to 3-6 overall, while the Cowgirls fell to 2-2.
The Gauchos shuffled their singles lineup for the second straight day, and this time it paid off. For the first time this season, Natalia Lozano played from the No. 1 position, and Sofia Novak competed from the No. 2 spot. Both players won their matches, as Lozano narrowly edged Sarah Summerfield (3-6, 7-5, 7-6), and Novak handled Simona Synkova (6-3, 6-2).
Annabel Gledden, playing in just her second match at the No. 3 slot, lost a hard fought battle against Wyoming’s Alexandra Kovacs (5-7, 7-6 (2) 10-3). On Friday, Gledden replaced Asagi Onaga at the No. 3 position.
Also moving up in the lineup, Jordan Dockendorf played well at the No. 4 position, as she shut down Rebecca Berger in straight sets (6-2, 6-4). Tova Hausman lost a heartbreaker to Kim van Ginkel (6-7, 6-3, 11-9), in her first dual match at the No. 5 spot. Bryanna Ojeda continued to thrive at the No. 6 position, as she squeaked out a three-set victory over Sasa Nemcova (6-3, 2-6, 10-8).
In doubles action, the Gauchos took two of three matches to earn the doubles point. Lozano and Dockendorf dominated the team of Synkova and Kovacs (8-1) in No. 1 doubles play. The other Gaucho win came at the No. 3 spot, where Novak and Hausman defeated Berger and Paloma Navarro (8-5). Ojeda and Onagi came up short against the Cowgirl team of Summerfield and van Ginkel (8-5).
The Gauchos will be back in action next weekend, when they return home to take on Fresno Pacific on Friday, February 26th. Fresno Pacific, a make-up match from the Februay 6th rainout, will be the last tune-up for the Gauchos, before they host UC Davis on the 27th at 10:00 a.m., to kick off Big West league play.
