Gauchos caught in downward spiral

SAN DIEGO The UCSB softball team dropped its sixth straight game Saturday afternoon, falling to Western Kentucky 7-0 in the 20th Annual Campbell-Cartier Classic hosted by San Diego State.

Ciara Garcia connected with a three-run triple in the top of the second inning and pitcher Kim Wagner went the distance while only giving up seven hits for the Hilltoppers.

Kelly McDonald and Lainey DePompa each had a pair of hits for the Gauchos (4-7), but the Gauchos were unable to generate any offense against Wagner.

BOX SCORE

UCSB starting pitcher Krista Cobb lasted only two full innings, giving up four earned runs on six hits. MeLinda Matsumoto pitched four innings in relief of Cobb, striking out three batters while giving up three runs, two of them earned.

The Gauchos have now lost six straight games and have managed only two runs in their last four contests. They finished 0-4 in the Campbell-Cartier Classic, having dropped games to San Diego State, Washington, and Penn State.
