Gauchos can’t find home against Aztecs

SAN DIEGO UCSB’s (4-4) offense continued to struggle on Friday evening as the Gauchos were shutout by San Diego State (6-1) in the opener of the 20th annual Campbell/Cartier Classic, falling 6-0 to the Aztecs.

San Diego State pitcher Samantha Beasley gave up just a two-out fifth inning single to sophomore Lainey DePompa, while striking out 13. She allowed two UCSB baserunners with the first coming on a SDSU throwing error.

BOX SCORE

Beasley was helped by a four-run San Diego State third inning, highlighted by a three-run homer by sophomore Justeen Maeva. Tanya Holguin doubled home Felicia Reifschneider for the first run and was then replaced at second by Roshana Lavery. Lavery moved to third on a single by Monica Alnes before Maeva took a 1-0 pitch and cleared the bases with a homer well over the left field fence.

SDSU tacked on two more runs in the fourth when Brittany Knudsen and Reifschneider each reached base safely to begin the threat. After a strikeout, Alnes laced a double into the left-center gap that scored the two San Diego State baserunners.

Senior pitcher Lindsey Correa (1-2) took the loss after tossing six innings. She allowed five earned runs on 10 hits with three walks and two strikeouts.

UCSB will continue play at the tournament on Friday when they face No. 1 Washington at 11:30 a.m. and Penn State at 4:30 p.m.
