The UCSB women’s tennis team easily swept the doubles point and then took four out of six singles matches to win its Big West opening match on Friday, 5-2 over visiting UC Davis. The win improves the Gauchos overall record to 4-6.
UCSB got off to a fast start, dominating the doubles matches. Natalia Lozano and Jordan Dockendorf defeated Herzyl Legaspi and Ellie Edles at No. 1, 8-2. At No. 3, it was Tova Hausman and Sofia Novak whipping Dahra Zamudio and Noelle Eades, 8-2. At No. 2, it was Asagi Onaga and Bryanna Ojeda doubling-up on Lauren Curry and Desiree Stone, 8-4.
“We played really well in doubles,” said Gaucho head coach Pete Kirkwood. “Getting that point was just what we needed.”
UCSB dropped No. 1 and No. 2 singles, but swept the No. 4 through No. 6 spots. Dockendorf, a transfer from UCLA who attended nearby Dos Pueblos High School, was particularly a bright spot.
“Jordan Dockendorf winning at No. 3 was big,” Kirkwood said. No. 3 singles has been a trouble spot for us so to win there today was a real bright spot.”
Annabel Gledden put the Gauchos over the top with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Lauren Curry at No. 4. Her victory gave UCSB a 4-2 lead. Tova Hausman put the icing on the cake with a come-from-behind win over Ellie Edles at No. 5, 3-6, 6-4, (1-0)(10-7).
“Davis is a good team,” Kirkwood said. “But we were glad to be playing at home. We played 8 of 9 on the road to prepare for this and it paid off. It was good to play in front of our fans and we had to play well to win and did.”
Overall, the Gauchos improved to 4-6 on the season. Weather-permitting, they are scheduled to host Fresno Pacific in a non-conference match at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday.
