First inning runs hold up for SBCC

Four SBCC pitchers combined on a four-hitter Thursday and the defense was spectacular in a 2-1 nonconference softball victory over L.A. Mission at Pershing Park.

The Vaqueros (3-0) scored their runs in the first on RBI singles by Amanda Sharp and Jasmyne Holmes. They had two runners on in the second and fifth frames and loaded the bases in the sixth but couldn’t score. Mission got its run in the second on a walk and two straight singles.

“It was good to play a low-scoring game,” said coach Paula Congelton, whose team scored 14 and 10 runs in its first two games. “The kids said they were reading the pitcher but we left a lot of runners on.”

Right fielder Nicole Adair had two hits and scored a run for SBCC, which collected nine hits but left 10 runners on base.

The Vaqueros turned double plays in the second and third innings, started by shortstop Laura Cannon and relief pitcher Liliana Caughman. In the fourth, Mission’s Amanda Hernandez tried to stretch a single into a double but center fielder Joan Cannon threw her out at second.

Kailey Snyder and Sara Gazzaniga combined to retire the last nine batters with Gazzaniga, who pitched the seventh, striking out Hernandez to end the game.

SBCC will plays its first road games on Monday at Pasadena and Thursday at Bakersfield.
