Sophomore Jesse Ferris shot even-par 72 on Monday at Seven Oaks CC, leading the SBCC men’s golf team to sixth place in the season-opening Bakersfield Invitational. Canyons is the first-round leader in the 11-team field at 9-over-par 369.
Ferris is in third place, two shots behind the leader, Ryan Belliston of Citrus. Mike Levine turned in a 77 and former Dos Pueblos High standout Ryan Ritzau had a 78 for the Vaqueros.
“We didn’t play up to our capabilities and I don’t know if it was nerves or what,” said SBCC coach Chuck Melendez. “I think we’re capable of playing with the top teams.”
The final round will be played Tuesday morning at Rio Bravo CC.
