After a 3-0 Channel League victory over Ventura on Tuesday, the Santa Barbara High girls soccer team is on the brink of breaking Buena’s string of 16-straight league titles.
“We’re just one step closer to a Channel League championship,” said Dons midfielder Dena Slaff, who scored the game’s second goal halfway through the first half.
With a win next Tuesday at home versus the Bulldogs, the Dons would finish league unbeaten at 6-0-2 and hold the Channel League title outright, something that only Buena has been able to do for nearly two decades.
Briana Lopez was responsible for the match’s other two goals. Lopez gave the Dons a 1-0 lead in the 7th minute when her cross hit a Ventura defender in the knee, inadvertantly redirecting the ball into her own net.
Lopez, who assisted on Slaff’s first-half goal, added a third score later on to put the game out of reach.
“It’s good to have that security early on,” Slaff said, thankful that her team was able to put away the Cougars without too much stress.
Santa Barbara’s overall record is 7-5-2.
