The top-ranked Santa Barbara boys soccer team got some bad news before Friday’s game against Buena, learning the hard-nosed junior midfielder Sanford Spivey will miss the rest of the season with a knee injury.
Coach Todd Heil said that it’s a big loss for the team, but it certainly didn’t matter against the Bulldogs, as the Dons won 7-0.
“He’s just a tremendous impact player, and the energy and passion he brings is incredible,” said Heil.
The Dons, now 23-0-1, scored in the 11th minute when Jesse Gonzalez buried a penalty kick from 22 yards out. Eight minutes later, Justin Jimenez sent a cross to Fernando Alvarado, who made it 2-0. Alfredo Ibarra then assisted Christian Pardo on a score before halftime as the Dons went into the break up 3-0.
Marco Sanchez scored a pair of goals off of corner kicks in the second half. Geroge Muñoz and Jimenez added the final two goals.
The Dons, who have collected 16 shutouts this year, will try for an undefeated season on Tuesday at Buena.
“(Going undefeated) is definitely one of our goals and hopefully we can take that into the postseason as well as a No. 1 seed,” said Heil.
