The Santa Barbara girls water polo team got off to a 2-0 start at the SoCal Championships in Irvine, crushing Long Beach Poly 14-4 before picking up an 8-5 comeback win over Montebello.
Charlotte Hendrix scored four goals in the first game and had a hat trick with three assists in the second, while Makenzy Fowler also had four goals in the first and two goals with two helpers in the second.
“We’re playing pretty well right now. I also thought we played well against Dos Pueblos on Tuesday event though the score didn’t show it. We’re getting a lot of people involved,” said coach Mark Walsh.
The Dons got stellar play in goal against the Jackrabbits, as Maddie Trbucco had six saves in the first half and Chloe Brooks amassed 10 in the second half. Shaina Keough scored her first career goal in the first game while Kelsey Obrien and Olivia Cusimano each nabbed five steals against Montebello. The Dons (14-8) trialed in that game 4-3 at the half.
It will be a tough test on Friday night, as Santa Barbara faces Newport Harbor, the No. 2 team in Southern California.
