Despite a five-game win streak that includes wins over top-5 CIF teams Buena and Ventura, Santa Barbara’s girls basketball team couldn’t gain any ground in the Div. III-A polls on Monday, holding on to its No. 7 spot.
The Dons (20-5) posted two impressive wins last week, routing crosstown rival Dos Pueblos 71-38 before a 52-51 thriller at Ventura on Thursday night. Santa Barbara is seeking its first Channel League title since 1988.
“I’m trying to figure out how we won… We’re gonna have to watch the video and see if there was a mistake,” joked coach Andrew Butcher after the Ventura win.
Dos Pueblos’ girls water polo team won more games than anyone last week, recording seven victories to improve its overall mark to 27-0. The No. 1 Chargers brought down No. 6 Santa Barbara 13-5 on Tuesday before winning their third tournament title of the season over the weekend at the SoCal Challenge in Irvine.
Santa Barbara’s No. 1 and undefeated team, boys soccer, went 2-0 last week to make it 23-0-1 on the season. A win against Buena this week would assure the Dons a No. 1 ranking heading into playoffs.
Dos Pueblos and San Marcos, which play each other on Tuesday in a key Channel League clash, can be found in this week’s boys basketball polls. The Chargers, bouyed by the return of bigman Malik Heptot, are No. 15 in Div. II-A while the Royals are No. 12 in Div. III-A.
Tuesday’s game starts at 7 p.m. at the Thunderhut.
