It all came together for the Dos Pueblos girls soccer team on Tuesday, as the Chargers defeated visiting Buena 1-0 on Senior Day. It was Dos Pueblos’ first win over the Bulldogs in program history.
Claire Mathews scored the game’s only goal in the 77th minute on a penalty kick after Brandie Harris was taken down in the box.
“Tonight we bridged the gap between our strong core values as a program and our current undesirable level of play. We took care of the ball and played a passionate, disciplined and historical game of soccer,” said coach Molly Imel.
Meagan Bellefeuille notched the shutout, making a pair of saves.
“Meagan is one of the most talented and powerful keepers on the central coast , and she is not recognized enough for that,” said Imel.
Anchoring the defense were captain Kristen Witchey, Marina Pleasons and Amber Altavilla. Imel said that it was their most tactically sound defensive performance of the year and a career highlight for Witchey, a senior captain.
Offensively, the Chargers managed eight shots while the Bulldogs had six.
“We had a refreshing and tenacious attack led by senior Michelle Gee, with only four incomplete passes on the match,” said Imel. “Sophomore Brandie Harris and freshmen Rachel Smith and Jamie Benedetto combined on speed and superior technical skill.”
Mathews was back putting shots on frame immediately after scoring on the penalty kick.
“This is Charger girls soccer,” said an inspired Imel. “We pride ourselves in a clean game full of passion, discipline, intelligence, and heart. Tonight we lit the DP soccer torch for girls soccer — look for it to burn for seasons to come.”
