If it weren’t for a rough third quarter, Bishop Diego’s boys basketball team would have been right there with No. 5 seed St. Anthony.
Indeed the Cardinals lost the quarter by 12 and the game by 14, bowing out of the Div. V-A CIF playoffs after a 65-51 decision on Wednesday night.
“We played really well,” said Bishop Diego head coach Ray Vazquez. “We were down three at half.”
After being outscored 19-7 in the third, Bishop came back to outscore St. Anthony 18-17 in the final period.
“The things we needed to do to be close, we did for a majority for the game,” Vazquez thought.
Senior Hayden Slaught racked up a team-high 19 points in his final game as a Cardinal. Trent Speier, Eduardo Colasante, Brian Herrera, and Ted Sleep also sat in the halftime locker room for the last time in a Cardinal uniform.
Paul Garcia joined Slaught in double figures, scoring 10 of his 14 points in the first quarter. Foul trouble slowed him after that, limiting his minutes.
Emmanuel Andino poured in a team-high 16 points for St. Anthony, a Sante Fe League team that improves to 19-6 on the season.
Vazquez noted that St. Anthony’s gym was used in the movie “Coach Carter” and that it was a special place to play.
It was a great atmosphere,” he said. “The kids enjoyed the experience.”
