Bishop Diego’s girls soccer team couldn’t hold on to a 2-1 lead on Tuesday, letting a 3-2 Frontier League win go to visiting Grace Brethren.
Natalie Durtche gave the Cardinals a 1-0 lead on a free kick and Candace Melgoza added another goal before halftime to keep Bishop in the lead at 2-1.
Play continued through a brief hail storm in the first half, which presented a nuisance that lasted only a few minutes.
“Grace threw everything but the kitchen sink at us to start the second half,” said Bishop Diego head coach Brent Gonsalves, whose team finishes its regular season on Thursday at league-leading Malibu.
Grace scored in the 48th minute and again in the 65th to take control.
Melgoza’s goal was the 17th of the year for the senior. Melissa Georgi, Helena Schmidt and Michelle Salazar were recognized with Melgoza on Tuesday for Senior Day.
“It’s a good crew that we’re going to lose,” Gonsalves said.
