Carly Biedul scored with one second left in regulation on Monday to force overtime and the Cate girls water polo team proceeded to pull away, picking up a 7-4 win over visiting Nordhoff.
Down 4-3 with four seconds left, Cate called a timeout and drew up a play that would effectively free Biedul for one last shot. Luckily for Cate, she was right on target, sending the crowd wild and forcing two more three-minute periods. Coach Nathan Alldredge said that the game was never in doubt from that point on, as Belle Kammer scored first and Cate never looked back. Kate Montgomery’s drive fired in another goal with Madeline Robison (three goals) finishing off the game to end it 7-4.
Senior goalie Jazmin Sherwood had five huge blocks late in the game to energize the crowd and help hold the visitors back in several key moments. Wednesday is do-or-die as Cate plays crosstown rival Carpinteria in the last game of the regular season, with a playoff spot likely awarded to the winner.
