Westmont Men’s Tennis started the year with a road trip to UC Santa Cruz but fell to the Banana Slugs 8-1. The Warriors played without Carlos Lima who was ineligible for the first match of the year.
The Warriors dropped all three doubles matches, though Diego Almeida and Aaron Cooke went to a tiebreaker before falling 9-8 (6) to Erich Koeign and Ian Stanley at number two. Bryan Cox and Mattias Neuman lost 8-5 at number one doubles to Brian Pybas and Marc Vartabedian. On the number three court, Parker and Larsen and Ulrisch Capaul defeated Tiago Hayashi and Arthur Kalayjian 8-3.
Hayashi earned the Warriors’ only win with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Pybas at number one singles. Cox battled Marc Vartabedian at number two. After losing the first set in a tiebreaker, Cox came back to win the second set 6-2. However, Bartabedian won another tiebreaker in the third set to take the match.
At number three singles, Almeida won the first set 6-2 before losing the next two sets 6-3, 6-2. Kent Stormans and Kalayjian fell by identical scores (6-0, 6-3) with Stormans losing at number five to Aron Morrill while Kalayjian lost to Andre Halabi at number six. At number four, Neuman lost the first set to Silvo Chiba 7-6 and then withdrew due to cramping with the score 5-4 in favor of Chiba.
Westmont begins Golden State Athletic Conference play next Saturday when they travel to San Diego to take on the Sea Lions of Point Loma Nazarene.
