The Westmont Warriors men’s basketball team is now 5-0 in GSAC games played on Saturday.
Oddly enough they are 0-5 in GSAC games played on any other night. “We’ve made a request to play all our games on the weekend” said coach John Moore jokingly. “We’ll play on Sundays if we have to.”
Moore mentioned the weekend games being good because the team is together longer because classes don’t conflict. He also mentioned it helps with the crowd, though attendance at the games has been impressive for all games, especially the Biola game which drew one of the biggest crowds he has seen.
Three of the Saturday games were on the road for the warriors, yet they were still able to win by an average score of seven points. It was helpful that they played mainly the lower teams in GSAC on Saturday games. Their wins have been against Hope International, Point Loma, Vanguard, San Diego Christian, and the Master’s college. The Mustangs are the only team in that group who have a winning GSAC record (6-4). But still it is quite an astonishing statistic so far.
BLANCO OUT: The Women’s basketball team will go the rest of the season without star forward Angel Blanco. She has withdrawn from Westmont for this semester on medical leave. She does plan to come back next year for her senior
season.
She averages 11.8 points and 6.9 rebounds a game.
BASEBALL DIAMOND DEBUT: The new baseball was finally be tested for the Warriors, who swept a season-opening doubleheader against Pomona-Pitzer. Westmont head baseball coach Robert Ruiz attended Pitzer college for four years and had a wonderful playing career for them.
He played second base for them and twice helped lead his team to a conference title. He also was twice named to the All-SCIAC and All-West Region teams. His senior year his head coach was Frank Pericolosi, the current head coach for Pomona Pitzer.
