Warrior hoopsters take over second place

Amanda Burch scored 21 points and Caitlin Wallace added 17 on Thursday as the Carpinteria girls basketball team took sole possession of second place in the Frontier League with a 43-21 win over Malibu.

Wallace added 11 rebounds, five assists and a steal, while Sierra Freeman had five steals. The win avenged an earlier home loss the Warriors suffered against the sharks.

“This was sweet,” said coach Dan Mercer. “We’ve won five in a row and we’re building up a lot of confidence at the right time of the season.”

The Warriors will be battling the Sharks and Bishop Diego for second place down the stretch, and the top three teams in the league make the postseason.

Carpinteria (13-7, 4-2) hosts first-place Santa Clara on Tuesday.
