Francesca DeAngelis piled up 20 points, six rebounds and six steals on Saturday night, leading the SBCC women’s basketball team to a 77-51 WSC North triumph over Hancock at the Sports Pavilion.
Jake Kelly hit 3-5 from downtown and finished with 13 points while Giovanna Aplin had 10. Mara Lux scored nine points and grabbed a season-high 14 rebounds for the second-place Vaqueros (12-10, 4-1), who won for the fifth time in six games. Lux, who’s averaging 10.8 boards in her last four outings, had 10 offensive rebounds.
DeAngelis tallied 14 first-half points as the Vaqueros broke open a one-point game with a 19-3 run that made it 32-15 with 3:56 left. SBCC led 39-23 at the break.
“I like our defense right now,” said coach Sandrine Krul, whose team forced 35 turnovers. “We’re at a point where we can switch it up. We can go zone, we can go man, we can go matchup. And that’s when we go on our runs when we’re switching it up.
“We’re still trying to find a way to play a full 40 minutes. If you can go on a 19-3 run in just a few minutes, you should be able to do it for an entire game.”
The Vaqueros opened the second half on a 14-4 burst, capped by a 3-pointer and driving layup by Aplin that made it 53-27. Hancock responded with 14-2 run to pull within 14 but SBCC regained control with seven straight points.
“I want our team to enjoy this ride,” said Krul. “It’s a long season and we’re right where we need to be.”
SBCC opens a three-game road trip on Wednesday at Cuesta.
