SBCC had a tough shooting night on Saturday and top-ranked Ventura College took advantage to post a 64-39 victory in a WSC North women’s basketball game at Ventura.
The loss snapped a three-game win streak for the Vaqueros (10-10, 2-1), who hit just 23.3 percent from the floor. The Pirates (21-1, 4-0) built a 26-16 halftime lead, then outscored SBCC by 15 in the second half.
Francesca DeAngelis, coming off a 32-point game, was held to four points on 2-of-22 shooting. She missed all 10 of her 3-pointers on a night when the Vaqueros made just 3-20 from downtown.
“We just couldn’t shoot the ball,” said coach Sandrine Krul. “You have to make shots to win. If you’re not going to hit anything, then you have to defend.”
Jake Kelly led SBCC with 11 points (all in the second half) and four steals. Mara Lux had 11 rebounds while Brittany Stephenson chipped in with eight points and six boards.
The Vaqueros have two home games at 5 p.m. next week against Oxnard (Wednesday) and Hancock (Saturday).
