Unselfish Dons see good results

Rebecca Griffin tossed in 22 points and Tess Emerson recorded a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds to power the Santa Barbara High girls basketball team to an 81-44 rout over Oxnard at the one-day Buena Invitational on Saturday.

The Dons (16-5) were dominating from the onset, rolling out to a 21-6 lead in the first quarter. They led 43-14 at halftime.

“We had 15 assists in the first half,” Santa Barbara coach Andrew Butcher said. “We were really unselfish.”

Freshman guard Ivette Gil handed out 10 assists for the game and Emerson had four to go with three steals.

Butcher said the game was a reflection of the team’s hard work in practice.

“We had been struggling in past few games,” he said. “Today, we played better. We’ve been practicing hard. We had a real good game and played hard.”

The Dons (2-1) play a key Channel League game Thursday at home against 3-0 Buena.
