The power went back on at San Marcos High School about 15 minutes before Ventura’s wrestling team arrived.
“I was sort of hoping it wouldn’t. I was thinking I’d rather wrestle them later in the year when we weren’t missing three kids,” said San Marcos coach Tony Becerra.
It might not have helped against the top-ranked Cougars, who won 60-11. The Royals had to forfeit six matches total, but did pick up three victories.
Sophomore Jonathan Andrade defeated John Armstrong 14-12 in a close bout at 114 pounds, while David Billesbach picked up a 15-3 major decision over Jam Sweder at 132 pounds. Connor Pfefferle defeated Juan Cortez by major decision, 13-5, at 147 pounds.
Only two teams from the Channel League move on to CIF competition, and Royals coach Tony Becerra says that his team should match up well with Dos Pueblos and Buena, which are the other two contenders for the No. 2 spot. Ventura and DP are the only teams to ever represent the league in CIF.
San Marcos hosts Buena next Thursday.
