Speier comes up spades for Bishop

Bishop Diego’s Trent Speier finished off the Cardinals’ 62-60 overtime win over Santa Paula with a classic ending, hauling in a rebound and putting back the buzzer-beating game-winner at the Brickhouse on Wednesday night.

Santa Paula opened a six-point lead in the overtime period before Bishop went on a 8-0 run to win the game.

It started with Speier making his first basket in overtime with two minutes remaining. After a defensive stop, Noah Tack scored from the low post to bring Bishop within two. Tack tied the game at 60-60 with two free throws.

Hayden Slaught came up with the steal on the ensuing press and passed to Paul Garcia, who took the ball upcourt and returned the ball to an open Slaught for a 3-point look.

Slaught’s attempt was off-target but Speier was there for one of his seven rebounds and was able to bank in a six-footer for the win.

“The crowd just went crazy,” said Bishop head coach Ray Vazquez.

Speier finished with 12 points and Tack recorded a game-high 22 points with 12 rebounds. Eighteen of Tack’s 22 came after halftime.

Sam Kwock, who played the entire game, tallied 15 points and turned the ball over just once.

Bishop evens its Frontier League record to 1-1 and travels to Fillmore on Friday.
